The celebration of St. Joseph's Feast Day with an altar in his honor dates back to the middle ages, when Sicily underwent a major drought that threatened a massive famine. People prayed to their patron saint, St. Joseph, to bring them relief in the form of rain. In exchange, they promised to honor St. Joseph (the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary) with a proper banquet. Sure enough, he answered their prayers. In return, the people feasted on local foods such as fava beans, which thrived after the rain. Here at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, we still honor St. Joseph with a yearly altar to remind everyone of his powerful intercession.
